We are delighted to welcome back Lyn Evans to Off the Rails Arthouse. Lyn is a well-known artist, formerly living in Fife but now based in the Lake District. She is particularly noted for her landscape and natural form work and is inspired mostly by the more unusual colours of nature. Take a look on her website and you will be inspired too! She has exhibited widely both in the UK and internationally and is a highly experienced teacher.
Lyn works in a variety of media but greatly enjoys working in pastels, and produces exquisite work. This is what you will be exploring in this two-day workshop. It is suitable for people at all levels of experience with pastels, though it will be helpful if you have at least a basic level of proficiency in drawing or painting. If you have taken part in one of her previous workshops, you will have the chance to extend your skills. On day one, Lyn will demonstrate her approach to using pastels, focusing on markmaking, blending and glazing and you will get the chance to explore these techniques with her. You will work from your own subject matter in the form of photographs or sketches of landscape or natural form. Lyn will talk through how she approaches planning a piece of work while thinking about composition, colour and tone and will show you how to make thumbnail sketches and value drawings as a preliminary to a more finished piece. On the second day you will carry out a further piece using the technique of underpainting. This is very useful as it sets the values for your piece and gives you a head start.
Lyn will work with you on a one-to-one basis throughout the weekend so that your pastel techniques are extended and enhanced as you go. You will leave the workshop with a deep understanding of the versatility of this wonderful medium, with a selection of useful experiments and some great finished work.
You will need to invest in good quality pastels to benefit fully from the workshop and there are some reasonably priced suggestions in the materials list below. You can also supply your own paper, but Lyn will also have packs of paper to sell at a very reasonable rate.
Please note, hygiene and social distancing measures will be in place. For more information, please check the COVID arrangements section of our website.
Cost £125, including use of some materials
