Fife Contemporary Arts and Crafts Professional Development for Craft and Visual Artists – Active Listening

Led by Louise Ritchie, this session aims to help artists solve or identify their own problems and move forward with their practice. It is based on the concept of Active Listening: a skill that can be acquired and developed with practice. ‘Active listening’ means, as its name suggests, actively listening. That is fully concentrating on what is being said rather than just passively ‘hearing’ the message of the speaker. Active listening involves listening with all senses.

The premise is that a small group of practitioners (6-8) meet with a trained creative facilitator, each participant has the opportunity in a supportive and secure context, to explain a challenge or issue that they have with their practice. They are bringing their ‘issue’ to the group. The group listen deeply and independently construct reflective questions which are then given back to the ‘issue holder’ and taken away. There is no dialogue during the description of the challenge or in response to the questions. This approach is aimed at giving practitioners thoughtful insights and perspectives on their issue to help them make their own decisions.

Free to participants.
