As part of our ‘In Conversation with’ series of evening lectures, Off the Rails Arthouse is privileged to welcome Anne Pia, poet and writer. Anne is a fascinating person. She has had a long and successful career in education, as a practitioner, an HM Inspector and academic author. She achieved a Doctorate of Education in 2008. Over the past few years, however, her career has undergone a dramatic change of direction and she is rapidly establishing a national and international reputation as writer.
Born in Edinburgh as the grandchild of Italian immigrants, she was raised surrounded by the food, traditions and dialect of Southern Italy. Her Italian grandmother was a major influence, whose sense of style, love of food and wise views of life Anne has passed on to her three daughters. In 2017, her book Language of my Choosing was published. Described as ‘The candid life-memoir of an Italian Scot’ the book has been critically acclaimed and was shortlisted for the Saltire Society First Book of the Year award in 2017. In this vibrant memoir she shares her struggle to bridge the gap between a traditional immigrant way of life and attaining her goal of becoming an independent-minded professional woman. It is insightful, punchy and in places very entertaining.
Anne’s poetry has also been published widely. In March, she launches her new collection of poetry ‘Transitory.’ Described as ‘….interrogating every aspect of lived moments in graceful, supple and sharply observed poems…’, it has already been very well received. She has been hailed as ‘a fresh voice among contemporary Scottish Poets’.
Anne also has a deep interest in music and is an accomplished mandolin player. In this presentation she plans to combine readings from her two books with music. There will also be plenty of time to talk together, to reminisce and to explore the power of words.
