We are delighted to welcome a local artist with a growing national reputation for her portraiture and other work. Theresa Gourlay uses paint and mixed media to brilliant effect, to capture likeness, personality and mood. You can see a wide range of her beautiful work on her website and we are certain you will be inspired by it.
This is a one day workshop for anyone wishing an introduction to portraiture or those with some experience who would like to experiment with mixed media as well as paint. It involves a mix of warm-up drawing exercises and working from photographs in the morning then working with a live model in the afternoon. The pace will be fast, lively, (and fun) and you will end up with a strong understanding of proportion, colour, tone and how different materials work.
Some materials will be supplied to stimulate your thinking, but we will also suggest some materials you can bring.
Theresa graduated from DJCA in 1982 and retired from teaching in 2018.
‘I have spent the past four years looking, drawing and painting whatever, without examining the impulse. I used materials that I was drawn to mixing them up as I worked. Lots of coloured ink initially its translucence contrasted with solid blocks of acrylic paint. Then biro, coloured pencil, chalk and oil paint combined or making solo appearances on paper or canvas. I mainly paint and draw faces of people I know or remember or sometimes make up. I paint landscapes too, more often during lockdown, sketching outside gave my walks more purpose and gave me wonderful painting projects at home. Also there were not so many faces around to paint.’
Cost £65, including some materials, use of life model, plus tea and coffee
