We are delighted to welcome award-winning textile artist Andrea McMillan to Off the Rails Arthouse. Based in Auchtermuchty in Fife, Andrea has exhibited with Open Studios North Fife since 2017, and was a prize winner at the Fife Art Exhibition in 2015, 2018 and Highly Commended in the 2020 online event. She is highly skilled in patchwork and quilting and specialises in free machine embroidery. You can see examples of her lovely work here: asmcm1.wixsite.com/textile-art.
During lockdown Andrea concentrated on two series of works based on photographs taken in Fife, and much further afield. In this course, offered over six Thursdays, she will share with you the design process and stitching techniques that she used to produce these beautifully detailed pieces and you will produce a unique wall hanging inspired by your own photo. The course will include learning how to translate photographs into simplified images suitable for fabric and stitch. This stage will be experimental, fast-paced and fun, and many design materials will be provided. The next stage will be using a sewing machine to free-stitch your own wall hanging, with your own fabrics, wadding and threads. Finally, you will learn how to finish and present your wall hanging.
This workshop is for confident machine stitchers who are looking to do more and produce original and personal works of art. To get the most out of this course you should be able to use your sewing machine to free-machine stitch. The course is set out as follows:
Week one: introduction to the design process.
Week two: design your own wall hanging.
Week three: stitching on fabric blocks.
Weeks four and five: detail stitching.
Week six: finishing the work with borders and binding.
Cost £245, which includes some design materials plus tea and coffee.
