Another chance to work with textile artist Fiona Rutherford and enjoy exploring the wonderful world of tapestry weaving. Fiona’s tapestries have been exhibited widely across the UK and internationally and are held in major public exhibitions. Her tapestries are highly narrative, infused with stories, poems and music drawn from everyday life. They contain simple abstract imagery infused with a love of colour that stems from her early childhood years in India. You can see examples of her beautiful work here.
This two-day workshop is for people of all levels. If you are a complete beginner, you will enjoy trying something entirely different. If you have more experience in tapestry weaving, or are versed in other art, design or textile techniques, this is a chance to add to your range of techniques and design approaches, or simply enjoy a weekend of weaving alongside an expert.
Fiona will talk through the basic steps of tapestry weaving, helping you focus on the use of colour and yarns that weave a tapestry to life by playing with colour, shape and texture. She will also provide examples of her own and other tapestry weavers’ work to inspire you. You will have a chance to explore different design ideas, and by the end of the weekend, be well on the way to a finished piece.
Wooden weaving frames and a small range of Fiona’s cotton and linen yarns will be available. However, you are welcome to bring any yarns you may wish to work with. The cost of the workshop includes the frame which you can take home.
