We are delighted to welcome back tapestry weaver Fiona Rutherford for another two-day workshop. Fiona’s tapestries have been exhibited widely across the UK and internationally and are held in major public exhibitions. Her tapestries are highly narrative, infused with stories, poems and music drawn from everyday life. They contain simple abstract imagery infused with a love of colour that stems from her early childhood years in India. You can see examples of her beautiful work here.
This workshop will appeal particularly to those of you with some knowledge of tapestry weaving, but would like to extend techniques and design approaches. It will focus on exploring the range of surface qualities that can be achieved in tapestry weaving and is inspired by the all the visual energy that our landscape has to offer. You will be working with a range of yarns of varying thickness and texture as well as a selective use of colour to create lines and marks in the weave. You will also be exploring some texture techniques such as wrapping, knotting and tufting.
However, you will also be most welcome if you are new to tapestry weaving and keen to get to grips with this wonderful craft.
You are encouraged to bring visual inspiration to work from such as photographs or ideas from your sketchbooks. Fiona will provide examples of her own and other tapestry weavers’ work to inspire you.
Yarns are supplied and included in the cost, but Fiona is quite happy if you wish to also bring your own yarns to work with. Tapestry frames will also be provided for use during the weekend, with an option to buy for a small charge if you wish to take it away. Again, if you have one already, you can bring that.
Cost £90, including all yarns
