The Joy of the Sketchbook

Thursday 7th March at 7:00pm 9:00pm

As part of the Open House at the Arthouse we run free taster sessions every 4-6 weeks. The Joy of the Sketchbook- lead by Claire Heminsley is the next in the series.

This taster session is all about sketchbooks. Why, how, what and where we use them.

We will discuss why a sketchbook can be an important part of the creative process or simply a place to keep notes and collect visuals. How to start, what size and shape it could be and where it can be used.

There will also be an opportunity to make or customise your own sketchbook.

Claire will share her own sketchbooks and show examples of how other artists use this multifaceted book.

A bit about Claire Heminsley

Claire studied textiles at The Glasgow School of Art. She set up INCAHOOTS over 30 years ago and expanded her work to include illustration. During this time, she has worked on a wide range of commissions, exhibitions and projects. Claire works with a broad range of media and consequently has a diverse output, from detailed scraperboard prints to more experimental sculptural and mixed media pieces for exhibition. Her last solo exhibition ‘Objects of Celebration’ embodied all aspects of her practice. In 2021 she was awarded a Creative Scotland Open fund grant for a research project called ‘Almost a map, Almost a word’

Alongside this she has taught design, textiles and illustration in further and higher education and for workshops throughout Scotland. Her design practice feeds into her teaching and vice versa providing a perfect combination. She has been a board member of Off the Rails Arthouse since its inception.
