This course is aimed at people with different levels of experience including beginners, or those who would welcome one–to–one support with a personal project. Working in watercolour, the course will appeal to artists who want to develop ideas and extend their creative approach.
Sarah Knox returns to Off the Rails following a highly successful workshop in 2019. She is an established professional artist and experienced art teacher based in Edinburgh, known for her evocative paintings of the Scottish landscape, capturing the atmosphere and the fall of light on a place using fluid gestural brushstrokes and subtle colour palettes.
The workshop will start with Sarah talking about her working process and other influences. She will talk about colour, demonstrate watercolour technique and discuss the contrast of approach with inks, collage, pastels and acrylic. You will work individually, but with support from Sarah and will have a chance to discuss and share ideas.
Sarah will lead an experimental approach showing you how to develop your work by reimagining and rescaling ideas.
You will need to bring your sketchbook or loose leaf studies (with a selection of your quick monochrome or colour landscape sketches or visual sources such as photographs) with to a view to developing these on the day. Weather permitting, plein air work should be possible in the railway garden.
Sarah will provide a rich resource of materials but do please bring any favoured brushes, soft pencils, watercolour paint and watercolour paper. Bring a sketching stool if you want to a draw outside and an A4 or A3 drawing board, masking tape and at least 2 sketchbooks. Wear layers: a waterproof and jumper with a wool mix. Sunglasses and sunhat if needed and sensible footwear.
Do take a look at Sarah’s work. She exhibits widely and is one of 15 artists representing Scotland at the international watercolour exhibition Fabriano in Acquarello 2021. This year also sees her exhibiting at Artwalk Porty, Tatha Gallery, St Margaret’s House and a solo exhibition at Dawyck Botanical Gardens.
‘Marrying oil paint’s depth of hue with watercolour-style fluidity, Sarah Knox’s impressionistic paintings and prints gorgeously conjure coastal and mountain vistas, often of the Highlands and Hebrides…’The Scotsman,Pittenweem Arts Festival.
