This one-day workshop is aimed at people with different levels of experience including beginners, or those who would welcome one-to-one support with a personal project. Working in watercolour, the course will appeal to artists who want to develop ideas and extend their creative approach. Please be assured that social distancing protocols and hygiene arrangements will be in place throughout the day. Please check here for further details.
Come and join Edinburgh artist Sarah Knox who is well-known for her atmospheric landscape painting and now is brimming with enthusiasm about her fresh refocus since lockdown as she began drawing plein-air in her garden and found inspiration in immediate surroundings and people. Weather permitting, Sarah will take you outside to draw and paint in the Arthouse garden and surroundings – searching out those repeated motifs such as: the lines of planting, the shape of the shed and a fellow artist drawing. She will demonstrate how the process of making multiple drawings will become meditative and therapeutic. You will also have the opportunity to work indoors, either from your sketches or from your own reference material.
Sarah will share her tips on years of painting in all weathers and will talk you through her new body of work #sarahknoxgardencanvas. You will work individually, but with support from Sarah and will have a chance to discuss and share ideas. Sarah will provide some materials but if you have favoured bushes or watercolours please bring them along with sketches and reference material.
Sarah Knox returns to Off the Rails following a highly successful workshop last year. An artist and experienced art teacher based in Edinburgh, Sarah is known for her evocative paintings of the Scottish landscape, capturing the atmosphere and the fall of light on a place using fluid gestural brushstrokes and subtle colour palettes.
Do take a look at Sarah’s work on her website (address below). She exhibits widely and is one of 15 artists representing Scotland at the international watercolour exhibition Fabriano in Acquarello 2021. Next year, she will also have a solo exhibition at Dawyck Botanical Gardens in the borders.
‘Marrying oil paint’s depth of hue with watercolour-style fluidity, Sarah Knox’s impressionistic paintings and prints gorgeously conjure coastal and mountain vistas, often of the Highlands and Hebrides…’ The Scotsman, Pittenweem Arts Festival.
